The catchment receives relatively clean inflows from the forested upper reaches of the Brunswick and flow from the Lunenburgh River in the south-west.

Much of the catchment is uncleared native vegetation, particularly in the upper reaches of the Lunenburgh River, but there are small areas of dairy farming and plantation timber. Water quality is generally good with low nutrient concentrations measured in the river.
