A special soil renovation is in progress at Runnymede Farm, a beef and egg farm on the Swan Coastal Plain. Healthy Estuaries WA is working with farmer Blythe Calnan to explore using new technology the ‘SOILKEE Renovator’ to improve soil health and nutrient cycling.
Our goal is to keep nutrients like phosphorus cycling on farms and being used for pasture growth, preventing them from entering our waterways where they can fuel harmful algal growth.
Baseline measurements of soil carbon and nutrient profiles have been taken across different soil types on the farm. This will allow the team to assess how these change after the soil renovation efforts.
