Summit brings together diverse ideas to manage run-off into WA’s estuaries
Farming, land and water management experts gathered in Mandurah today to discuss the best ways to manage nutrient run-off into Western Australian estuaries. The Nutrient Summit, hosted by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), is part of the department’s work to improve the health of regional estuaries. DWER interim Director General Mike Rowe said the summit was an important forum for local farmers, scientists and government to share ideas on how to best tackle nutrients in our waterways.
South Yunderup fish deaths investigation completed
Investigations into the death of approximately 500 bream and herring in the Murray River last month have been completed.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation responded to reports of dead fish in the Murray River between Ravenswood and South Yunderup on 25 June.
An autopsy of the dead fish undertaken by fish health experts at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development revealed that the fish had suffered stress from exposure to poor water quality.
South Yunderup fish death response underway
The Department of Water and Department of Fisheries are currently responding to reports of dead fish in the Murray River between Ravenswood and South Yunderup. An investigation is underway and departmental officers have collected water, fish and phytoplankton samples for analysis.

Although no fish deaths have been observed, the Department is closely monitoring the waterways and investigating possible causes for the elevated algae levels.
